Question: Methadone.any appropriate info needed.for how long is methadone used to detox from opiate drug addiction?

Hi, i have just started on a methadone programme for Opiate drug addiction. I know very little about methadone, i want to know what dose people take and for what? also how long it is used for? i've heard a lot of people say they've been on it for years and i find that quite disheartening, it just seems like i am swapping one drug addiction for another! I also want to know of it's success rate for leaving patients clean of all drugs long term? If anyone has ANY helpful information about Methadone treatment i would really appreciate it. I don't know anyone personally who has been through a methadone program so it would be great to hear anything from people who have had firsthand experience with Methadone. I feel about out of my depth here and need some advise! Thanks in advance.

The length of time you spend on methadone is down to yourself it is a huge topic to try and cover in this small forum. if you want to wean yourself of your meth it can be done! reduce by small amounts and allow a couple of weeks inbetween each reduction to allow your body to get used to the change. (dont forget meth is a long lasting opiate and changes in the amount you take can take a couple ofdays to register) getting off meth isn't always the problem. staying clean after is where you need support and structure as until you deal with the reasons why you started using drugs in the first the problem and the thought process remains the same. on the other hand if you are happy on meth why bother coming off it? i know several people who have been on maintainence prescriptions since the mid eighties and have held down jobs, families and normal lifestyles. if you want to stop using you will do it but the first step is brutal honesty with yourself in asking do i really want to stop? I'm sorry but you need Suboxone instead... I took 10-30mg of Methadone a day for 5 months, had EXTREMELY bad withdrawals for 3 weeks.... it was HORRIBLE. Worst withdrawals I've ever gone through... I'm sorry that does not really help... But please take my word.... switch to Suboxone... It helps even more and does not produce a high whatsoever.
