Methadone Treatment: Methadone Facts

Question: How long can a person be miserable after stopping methadone treatments?

I have a freind that took methadone for 6 years and then went off of it 5 mil at a time now they are done and it has been about 14 days when will the mood swings stop?

The moods will last as long as he/ she lets them~ And I don't in any way want to seem mean-I am on bupes myself, so I understand the suffering. Something happened to me earlier this summer and I was at a place where I COULDN'T take my bupenorphine for 2 weeks, the first day or two I thought that I would just die, and, when I found out that I didn't, well, life went on, and, after 2 weeks clean, I went back on them. BUT that was me..... What I should say, is that once your friend gets back on track, whether to work, school, or maybe even volunteering somewhere~ this is the real answer. We drug addicts need to feel needed and wanted- and the need to be kept busy is one of the greatest help that I can offer an answer to. So just give your friend all the courage you have, cause he/ she will need it. Good luck with this!

Heroin withdrawal usually peaks within 3 days and is essentially finished within a week to ten days. Methadone withdrawal, however, may not peak for 7-10 days and may last for several weeks to months. So, if he is 14 days post methadone and moodiness is the only symptom still remaining he is doing great. Much of this is probably due to the fact that he detoxed slowly which is what I try to tell people will give them the greatest chance of success.
