Question: Methadone detox while pregnant?

My sister was prescribed methadone for severe sciatica and became pregnant. Her dose was 35 mgs when she got pregnant after birth control failure.She decided to keep the baby and slowly detox, and is now 16 weeks preg and down to 16 mgs. She has a few aches and pains but nothing serious at all, but is under stress. As this med is also for heroin addicts, she's nervous about how people will treat her, plus really doesn't have too many people to talk to. Has anyone out there detoxed from this medicine while pregnant?

I could be wrong but I've never heard of methadone being used for sciatica. That sounds very strange to me. But I guess it can happen.......I mean if she has to be on it she has to be on it. Its unfortunate when people have to rely on such powerful drugs to be free from pain. But living in pain is no quality of life. It's good she is lessening the dose, so people should appluad her for that, seeing as sciatica doesn't just go away. It usually gets worst in pregnancy.

I had a friend who detoxed while being pregnant, her and the baby are fine and she is much better now that she is off of everything. Tell your sister not to worry as long as she has regular visits with her doctor she'll be fine.

Hi I go to a methadone clinic I started there while I was pregnant. It is VERY dangerous to go through detox while pregnant. In fact, I had to increase my dose during my pregnancy so I wouldn't go through any withdrawals and miscarry. Any Dr that deals with methadone that knows what they are doing would highly advise against it. I personally know 2 women who lost their babies because of detoxing from methadone. One lost hers at 7 months because her clinic(a very bad one) kicked her out for non payment and they put her on a 21 day detox. She's in the process of suing. The other woman lost hers at four months because her idiot Dr thought the detox would be OK. Guess is wasn't!. Methadone causes no harm to the baby. I know, my one year old is awesome. He's in perfect health and he has the best demeanor I have ever seen in a baby. He is always happy. Here's a link to a message board for methadone.
