Question: What parents should do when first confronted with adult child's drug addiction?

Be honest and let the adult know that you do love and support them and will be there for recovery efforts. Don't be an enabler and be prepared for tough love.

I am not even kidding, watch the show INTERVENTION on A &E. If you have never seen this, search it online. This is literally EXACTLY what the TV show is about. unless your child is 'addicted' to something like pot or alcohol, which really isn't that bad. I wish you could provide more details. Please watch Intervention, though. It really is the best resource you could have.

You can't just take their lives away because you honestly can't stop your child from getting drugs because several teenagers sell drugs at school so if they want them bad enough then they can get them. do ground them from some things but not everything so that they do not feel depressed and bored which will make them miss the drugs even more. The best thing you can do is guilt trip them. tell them about how far you were hoping they would go in life and how dissapointed you are. Tell them what would happen to you if the cops found his drugs in your house ( they can take you house ) and if it is addictive such as any tipe of opiate based drug take your child to rehab. Drug test them weekly so that they dont try to do it behind your back and make them realize that you can no longer trust them. - im a teenager that smoked way to much weed and this worked for my parents. Trust me when they took everything away it just made me want to do it all over again.
